Physical Education (PE)

At St Agatha's School we believe that PE plays an essential role in young children's lives. Our commitment to promoting PE has led to us achieving a Gold Kite Mark Award for the past two years for the quality of PE, extra-curricular sports’ clubs and participation in competitive events.

As well as improving your child’s physical health it also improves their mental wellbeing and the high quality physical education that we provide promotes fitness and positive attitudes. PE also encourages personal and social skills, such as self-confidence, leadership and an understanding of the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Your child will learn the fundamentals of physical education such as hand and foot-eye co-ordination, fine and gross motor skills, teamwork skills and problem solving. These will be learnt through both indoor activities of dance, gymnastics and circuit training and also through outdoor games including Tennis, Football, Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Cricket, Rounders, Basketball and Athletics. Please see the school PE curriculum for more information.

As a school we attend up to 30 sporting events each academic year, providing our young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best. These include borough competitions, festivals, as well as fixtures against other schools.

Sporting Events

We strive for all KS2 students to attend at least one event throughout the year but, as you can imagine, this can be difficult due to the number of events we can attend and the type of events on offer. For your information, we choose students based on:

Competitive Events:

  • PE grades
  • trials where possible

Festival Events:

  • effort in PE class
  • teacher recommendations

Thank you for supporting your child if they do not get chosen to attend an event this year and thank you to all the parent volunteers who support us in travelling to events as we could not take part without you.

All KS2 children take part in the intra school sporting competitions held throughout the year.

Useful Links and Resources

Here at St Agatha's we continue to promote and prioritise being physically active in school as we recognise the important role it has for children's wellbeing. As a result, we have again been awarded the PLATINUM standard by the School Games Mark. The platinum award is provided after obtaining five 5 years of Gold standard.

This covers five key areas:
1.    The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity.
2.    The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school       improvement.
3.    Increase confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
4.    Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
5.    Increased participation in competitive sport.
For the Platinum standard we demonstrated how we have embedded positive experiences of competition into our PE offer and how this has made a difference to our uptake in sporting events.
Well done and thank you to all children, staff and parents involved in PE this year.
