Practise these words with your child in order that they can read each word, know the meaning of each word and then spell each word.

The grammar of a child’s first language is learnt naturally and implicitly through listening and speaking to others and from reading. Explicit knowledge of grammar is, however, very important, as it gives a child more control and choice in their use of language. 

Building this knowledge is best achieved through a focus on grammar within the teaching of reading, writing and speaking. Once children are familiar with a grammatical concept they are encouraged to apply and explore this concept in the grammar of their own speech and writing and to note where it is used by others. 

The concepts will first be introduced and then revisited in subsequent years to consolidate knowledge and build on the children’s understanding. The grammatical terms that the children should learn are known as 'terminology’. They should learn to recognise and use the terminology through discussion and practice.
