Prayer Life
At St Agatha’s School, we help our children to develop a reverential attitude in their prayer life and to make prayer a natural part of their daily lives.
Prayer Has a Purpose
Children are encouraged to pray in different ways according to their age and personal development.
The most important aspect of prayer for children is that they realise it is their way of communicating with God and is first and foremost a personal occasion.
Our R.E. curriculum offers progression for children as they move through the school. To read our prayer progression document, please follow this link.
Children are introduced to a variety of different ways of praying:
- quiet reflection / meditation
- praying together
- writing own prayers
- prayers through music
- learning traditional Christian / Catholic prayers
Daily Classroom Worship
Teachers plan daily opportunities for reflection and prayer based on scripture.
Weekly Collective Worship
On a Monday, each phase gather together for collective worship linked to the liturgical season or other religious themes such as Saints. This is led by our headteacher.
Class-Led Collective Worship and Prayer Services
Each class prepares and leads a class act of worship or prayer service. Parents and carers are invited to join the class. Please follow this link for dates and times.
Hymn Practice
Each Key Stage gathers together to sing songs of praise to God and practise hymns and songs that we use for our collective worship and for Mass.
Child-Led Liturgy
Children have the opportunity to prepare and lead their class in worship. Children are guided by adults to prepare for this.
Mass
Throughout the year, we have the joy of celebrating the Sacrament of the Eucharist in St Agatha’s Church. Children help to prepare and lead the Mass through reading, singing and bringing up the gifts during Mass. On different occasions parents and carers are invited to join us for Mass.
Liturgies
Throughout the year, to mark important events in the Church’s liturgical year, we hold special Liturgies.
Our School Creed
This is our school.
Let us be a community of prayer,
Praying for peace in our world.
Let peace have its home here among us.
We are committed to love and justice for each other.
And justice for brothers and sisters unknown to us.
A love of God.
Many hands built our school, many hearts make our school alive.
In the name of Jesus Christ.
Prayer and Liturgy in School
St Agatha's Parish Novena
Our School lead the Novena which took places at St Agatha’s Church on the evening night of Monday 3rd February. Year 5 and 6 pupils represented the school reading the reflection and taking the box of petitions to the altar.
Crown Service Mass
The Mayor invited Mrs Cahill and our newly appointed Year 6 RE leaders and School Council representatives to a special service to pray for those involved in the administration of our Justice System within the UK and, in particular, our local Crown Court Judges and Magistrates. The service took place at All Saints Parish Church, Market Place, Kingston upon Thames.
School Choir
Once again, our school choir led by Mrs. Rodgers brought a prayerful and festive cheer to the shoppers of Kingston when they sang Christmas Carols last week at John Lewis Kingston.
New School Year Mass
St Agatha's RE Ambassadors joined 130 Catholic schools at The Beginning of the New School Year Mass at St George's Cathedral, London. These pupils were asked to renew their commitment to serving the community of St Agatha's. The mass was led by the Archbishop of Southwark, John Wilson. The pupils stated that they were very proud that they were able to represent St Agatha's on this occasion.
Oscar Romero Award
St Agatha’s Catholic Primary School was invited to attend a very special mass at St George’s Cathedral in London. Our school has been recognised as demonstrating a commitment to Catholic Social Teaching and has therefore been awarded the participator level of The Oscar Romero Award.
The Year 6 RE ambassadors represented the school as they proudly received the certificate presented to them by the Archbishop of Southwark. All the children, who attended the Mass, were very excited about meeting the Archbishop who delivered an excellent homily sharing St Oscar Romero’s values. They enjoyed visiting the Saint Oscar Romero shrine and finding out more about him.
What an honour for St Agatha's to visit such an impressive cathedral.
